Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of about 187 poems, primarily on lighthearted and sentimental subjects, although the collection also contains epitaphs and other poems on the subjects of mortality and parting. In addition to numerous songs, charades, riddles, epigrams, rebuses, and acrostics, the volume also contains many laudatory poems addressed to women; occasional verses on lighthearted subjects such as one titled To a lady who bade me guess the subject of a drawing which she had lately made, and to write some verses for her on the circumstance; and poems concerning ladies' albums. The manuscript also includes more serious and elegiac poems such as On mortality; Werter's last letter to Charlotte; and On the death of my beloved child, Frederick John, who was born on September 1st 1855; and died August 27th 1856; the latter poem is dated September 1, 1756. A poem titled An appeal for Poland, dated 1831, exhorts the British and French to come to the aid of Polish soldiers revolting against Russian rule; other topical poems include On the accession of Queen Victoria; and To James Simpson Esq, after hearing his lectures on education. A poem on Prince Charles Edward after the Battle of Culloden is annotated with historical information about the event; two poems are purported to be based on Chinese legends; and numerous poems are in Latin. Though the title page establishes the date of the manuscript as 1842, the individual compositions are dated from 1826 to 1870.
